Learning Leader Challenges and the Modern Learning System

This presentation explores the eight top challenges of the corporate learning leader, as identified through a Training Industry research project of hundreds of companies across many verticals. This presentation will also explore the important role of data and measurement in developing highly effective training.

Tripping the Light Fantastic: Virtual Learning Environments, Serious Games and Authentic Alignment

In this fascinating look at the future of digital learning technology we will describe ongoing work in the design of serious games and mixed reality in learning. Virtual learning environments, particularly game worlds, provide impressive learning gains as evidenced by thousands of publications in the field produced by institutions such as Stanford University, MIT, University of Bristol, Simon Fraser University and national aging, health care and trade training settings. During this session we will discuss research on the effectiveness of serious games, the integration of open gameworld training with phased simulation gamification, new trials on XR, augmented and virtual reality based learning and how you can use gaming right now with my current LMS and design best practices. The key question to ask ourselves every day in this field is “what is coming in 5 years?”, not “what do we need right now?”. Come find out how to stay agile in an educational technology environment that shifts almost every day.

Dr. David Chandross is based at Ryerson University where he coordinates education and research on learning, engagement and and serious game design. He is currently working with many partners in this area, including the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, Baycrest Health Sciences, George Brown College, Simon Fraser University, The National Center of Excellence on Technology of Aging-Age Well and the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. He has collaborated in studies on the creation of fully gamified university courses across disciplines and work on the use of serious games in addiction medicine. Current interests include the design of virtual people, virtual reality integration with deep learning and the neuroscience of engagement.
